GOLDEN WEDDING. – An event of unusual interest took place on Wednesday the 22nd,
the occasion being the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Jones of Ospringe, S.
cross Road, Winchester, two old and highly respected inhabitants of the city.
Mr. Jones for many years carried on the business of a Woolstapler, and during 11
years was honoured by the Burgesses of the Ward of S. Maurice with a seat in our
local parliament. The whole of the family consisting of three sons and seven
daughters (who with one exception are married) together with their married
partners and children, numbering in all 51, assembled in honour of the event.
For the better accommodation of such a large party, the wedding breakfast was
served in the large house recently erected in Kingsgate Road. The ceremonial of
the festival was happily inaugurated by a few well chosen words by Mrs. Jones
and Mr. Joseph Clark, while a notable feature of the gathering was the
presentation of a handsome drawing room clock from their sons and daughters, and
also an eider down quilt from their 31 grandchildren. As a memento of the happy
event, the whole party were grouped and photographed by Mr. Salmon, which,
judging by the proofs sent, promises to be a great success. The numerous letters
and telegrams together with gifts of choice flowers, also many suitable
presents, evidenced the warm interest which friends near and distant took in the
happy event. We are sure our readers will join with us in expressing our
congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jones and in wishing them many more years of
unclouded happiness.
